True, but the fact he had to stress this so vehemently suggests that rather a lot of readers had not got the message the first time round. Published April 26th by Penguin Classics first published Gide’s work can be seen as an investigation of freedom and empowerment in the fo of moralistic and puritan constraints, and gravitates around his continuous effort to achieve intellectual honesty.
