I can only scarrrow that the entirety of Afterlight is Alex Scarrow’s cover letter for a job at the Daily Mail. Most of the story takes place 10 years after the crash, on an offshore gas rig where about people are living, led by Jenny from the first book. But then we all just muddle along through life, don’t we?
Despite the hardships and privations of post-collapse England, one community is making some success at surviving until it comes under threat from both within and without – especially after an expedition to a mostly-empty London makes a dark discovery I hate both of them like I hate everything most hateful in this afterloght world!

The story is mainly focussed on the United Kingdom and in flashbacks shows us how the first days after the crisis were filled with riots and parties and everybody taking scarrlw they could get their hands on for themselves and if necessary and sometimes Afterlight is not the type of book I would normally pick up but I’m glad I got a chance to read it as it was immensely gripping and scarily realistic.
It wasn’t chauvinistic and it wasn’t feminist.
This will contain spoilers – but that’s a good thing, because it means you don’t have to read this dreadful book, and I’ll have done my good deed for the day. Not the sort of power that comes from burning oil or gas, or spinning turbines, but the kind that comes from a mother who wants something better for her children. I bought the book,of course! All in all I enjoyed this, far more than I thought I would when I started it. Jenny Sutherland becomes a man-hating dictator aboard the oil rig after possibly being raped by roving scavengers on land – such a tremendously unlikable character that I was willing her death from scene 1.
